Santa Maria del Bando’s Church

In Escher’s footsteps

If you are a fan of Escher’s drawing’s of Atrani, it’s worth the hike up to this little church. Climbing the 1500 steps through the back alleys of Atrani give you lots of great view points over the idyllic fishing village. You’ll walk through lemon terraces and past a grotto on your way to the top. Go later in the afternoon when the sun is behind the headland but definitely use mosquito repellant! When you get to the church you’ll find the spot that Escher no doubt sat to create some of his best images of Amalfi.
